Lakemary Center, Inc.
In 1969, the Ursuline Sisters of Paola came together with parents, community members, and friends to create a safe, nurturing environment for children with intellectual/developmental disabilities called Lakemary Center. The main campus facilities (on 32 acres of land in Paola, KS donated by the Ursuline Sisters) were built through a federal grant which was matched by locally supported industrial revenue bonds providing a year-round residential school for children with special needs.
Adult Services began in 1983 when two residential homes were built in Paola. In 1985, Lakemary began to provide vocational training and teach adult living skills. By 1991, homes were constructed in Olathe and Lakemary began offering supervised apartment living in both Miami and Johnson counties (in Kansas).
In 1995, the Olathe Service Center opened to provide Adult employment and day service options in the area. These types of services have been such a need that we expanded to a second Olathe location and continue to grow. An additional office in Johnson County helps provide targeted case management, outpatient therapy, and a Specialized Foster Care program to area families.
Today, Lakemary is a well-established agency with a national reputation for quality whose services touch the lives of over 650 individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities each year and their families. Over 100 students currently receive primary and secondary education at Lakemary School, with nearly 3/4 of those students residing on campus year-round through our Psychiatric Residential Treatment Program (PRTF).
An additional 250 children receive services through community outreach programs including foster care, service coordination, and outpatient therapy. Our adult program serves over 120 individuals in residential settings throughout Johnson and Miami counties and over 200 in vocational programming.
From early intervention for at-risk young people to retirement supports for older adults – Lakemary provides a lifetime of opportunities.
