Description:

Nestled in the heart of Central Vermont, we have been providing compassionate, client-driven residential treatment to young adults experiencing difficulty managing life since 1982. As one of the oldest and most well-respected treatment programs in the United States, Spruce Mountain has helped hundreds of young men and women find relief and renewal while embarking on a path of self-discovery that leaves them with a stronger sense of self and clear vision for the future.

“Spruce totally turned around our son’s life. He had fallen into deep depression in college, and literally stopped going to classes. After two years at home with multiple psychiatric appointments and multiple group therapy sessions each week, he was somewhat better – but not by that much.

A residential program like Spruce was his last hope. In just over a year, they turned him into a mature and responsible adult, able to get things done, with his depression under control (with medication), interacting well with people, and able to juggle a fully-active life that included a part-time job, local volunteering, & also his Spruce treatment activities.

He has now returned to college, taking a full load& several extracurricular activities, & is doing very well, with good grades. His life is back on track, after he lost almost 4 years to his depression.”Our Director, Candace Beardsley, LICSW, founded Spruce Mountain Inn in 1982 in response to a perceived gap in services available to young adults struggling with mental health issues. Located in the former President’s House of Goddard College, Spruce programming has evolved over the years in response to the changing mental health and substance abuse treatment field without losing the small, home-like feel that we believe is especially conducive to growth and healing.
